Thyroarytenoid muscle
Thyroarytenoid Muscle

The hooked-wire electrodes are inserted laterally to the free edge of the vocal fold to avoid any harm to phonation. The position of the electrodes is confirmed by asking the patient to phonate /i:/ or to hold his breath in a glottal stop.

EMG Activity
  • During both procedures, the EMG activity sharply and sustainably increases, and swallowing causes a short strong thyroarytenoid activity during the glottal stop.
  • While breathing deeply in and out, the resting activity drops periodically during expiration.
  • If the needle is placed too laterally, recording the activity of the LCA, EMG activity increases and drops rapidly during phonation.
